The rise of the fake 'Breeders'

With the recent rise in public knowledge of Puppy farms and unethical back yard breeders, buyers are now smarter than ever and they are doing their research.

Unfortunately the crack down on puppy farms has given birth to the rise of the fake 'breeders'. These fake breeding associations are groups that puppy farms and back yard breeders can hide behind.

Fake breeders are hard to spot and are very convincing to the general public.

This post aims to discuss the differences between real breeders and fake 'breeders'. And how to spot the fake breeders.

1) Real breeders will be members of the ANKC and their state bodies (ie: Dogs Victoria, Dogs NSW etc) . If your breeder cannot show you their membership to the ANKC organisation then they ARE a puppy farmer.

Many puppy farmers are now joining organisations such as the MDBA.

2) Real dog breeders will automatically provide you with:

  • A vaccination certificate which shows vaccinations given, when the next ones are due, and evidence of the puppy's age (it is against Dogs Victoria's Code of Practice to sell a puppy under eight weeks of age).

  • A copy of or evidence of lodging ANKC Registration Certificate (papers)

  • When Your puppy was treated for worms and how often it needs to be treated in future

  • A feeding chart

  • Information on the puppy's likely nature, temperament, size and care requirements.

  • Details of any hereditary diseases or health problems which are known to affect the breed.

  • Information on responsible pet ownership, in particular care and welfare of the puppy, the time and facilities required for proper management (socialisation, exercise, adequate fencing, sufficient space and proper shelter)

With fake breeders becoming more and more prevalent, Please do your research.

If in doubt please contact your relevant ANKC club for more information.
